Acupuncture for Hormone Imbalances

Acupuncture for Hormone Imbalances

If your hormones are out of balance, then you know that this can affect almost every aspect of your body – from your cycles, to your energy, mood, sleep, digestion, and more. That’s why regulating the hormones with acupuncture creates such a drastic improvement in overall well-being.

It’s common for women to come to their first acupuncture appointment with irregular hormone lab results, and we see these improve on retesting, all without the use of hormonal drugs.

While this page is focusing on reproductive hormones, Chinese medicine can help improve thyroid and adrenal/stress hormone function as well.

How does Acupuncture regulate hormones?

Acupuncture has an overall regulatory effect on the body.  We call it “balancing”. Studies have confirmed what I see clinically: that when hormone blood panels are taken before and after a course of acupuncture, they improve or even completely balance themselves out.

Like everything related to actual healing, if you’re looking for an instant, or “bulldozer” effect, acupuncture is not going to be the answer. It takes time for the body to “reset” itself and learn to function correctly, when you’re working naturally.

Luckily, in the meantime as you’re improving you can expect to experience better energy, moods, sleep, more regular and/or less painful cycles; and just in general an improvement to the symptoms that brought you in.  You do not have to be completely “balanced” or healed to start feeling noticeable results.

And while “hormone symptoms” may be what brings you in, as an acupuncturist I’m not just interested in resolving the symptoms, but in resolving the underlying imbalances that are causing the symptoms in the first place. Then those same imbalances can’t progress further over time and turn into other worse symptoms or diseases.  In this way we’re working not only on resolution of immediate problems, but on prevention.
