Acupuncture for Fatigue

Fatigue can range the entire gamut between mild fatigue that gets in the way of hobbies and enjoyment of life, to so severe and chronically debilitating that a person is on disability.  Chronic Fatigue is perhaps the condition that terrifies people the most, as there is no known treatment, cause, or cure, and its effects in many cases go through almost every system of the body. Thankfully, Chinese Medicine is extremely effective in treating fatigue — whether sudden or chronic — and again and again I see patients get their lives back over the course of treatment; literally going from worrying that they’re dying, to having hopes for full recovery.  Like everything where we’re actually healing the condition rather than masking it with medication, it is not an overnight change. And perhaps more than any other condition, people must be cautioned that they need to be patient and consistent with their healing and treatment process.

There are many theories about what causes chronic fatigue. Is it a virus, like the same one that causes mono: epstein-barr? Or did you already have latent epstein-barr virus in the body and your lowered immune system just allowed it to take over? Is it related to that at all? Is it Lyme? Is it related to diet? Food allergies or intolerances? Stress? Candida? Luckily, like with any other “disease”, we don’t need to know the exact pathogen or cause in order to successfully treat from a Chinese medicine perspective. The reason is, we don’t focus on the potential pathogen or physiological disease mechanism, but on what is out of balance in the body that is allowing the disease or pathogen to take hold, and preventing the body’s correct functions from dealing with or overriding the causative. With that said, I will always look at food and potential pathogenic correlations when treating this condition, because working with the root, as well as the manifestation, is the key to resolution.

Acupuncture for Fatigue: treating each patient as an individual

No patient with Chronic Fatigue is exactly like the others. What I find is that each person has their own unique picture of the “syndrome”. This goes along perfectly with the Chinese way of seeing the body, where we temporarily put aside the western diagnosis and just find their unique “pattern of imbalance” and work to resolve the ways the imbalance is playing out in each person.  Once we strengthen a person and resolve imbalances, the system is able to restore harmony and immunity, which is what helps a person recover.

Herbs for Chronic Fatigue

Depending on what imbalance I end up diagnosing a person with, whether it is simply depleted and exhausted Qi, stress induced imbalances, or latent pathogens including viruses, parasites, fungus, or others; there are specific herbal formulas we can put together, that can slowly, and safely, restore balance to the body.  I say slowly and safely because if we suspect a pathogenic root, it is important to not go to fast with treatment and risk an extreme die-off or “detoxing” reaction that can be too hard for a weak body to handle.
