Acupuncture for Anxiety, Depression, Stress, & Irritability

Emotional wellness is something that is addressed with every patient regardless of what they made their acupuncture appointment for, but many people come in specifically for anxiety, depression, panic attacks, unmanageable stress, and problems like OCD or ADHD. Like with every condition, each person is looked at as an individual, and their unique energetic imbalances are addressed. I find acupuncture for anxiety and/or depression to be extremely effective.

Getting a bunch of needles stuck in you doesn’t sound relaxing, but ironically, that it exactly what people report.  While we have our own explanations for why acupuncture has this effect, using terms like moving and balancing Qi, studies show that it also regulates hormones and levels of endorphins and serotonin. I often treat people with severe anxiety and panic attacks, and with a series of treatments, they cease to be an issue.  Acupuncture is about resolving the underlying anxiety or other emotional and energetic imbalances that were at the root of the panic attacks. I also see people who report just feeling “flat” or “numb”; and regulating their energy with acupuncture helps bring them back to their normal selves.   Many people, should they choose, (and always notifying their MD first and working with them) are able to completely get off their “psych meds”, once the acupuncture has had enough of a chance to balance their system.

Typically, emotional issues don’t come on their own, but are accompanied with things like digestive problems, insomnia, fatigue or restlessness, heart palpitations, headaches or migraines, and menstrual irregularities or problems. Because acupuncture is working holistically, we are always addressing everything at the same time. Being relieved of these other symptoms in and of itself can help people feel better emotionally.

Chinese Herbs for Emotional Wellness

For treating the emotions, I typically combine herbal treatment with acupuncture, because even emotional imbalances have some sort of physical imbalance in the body that needs to be resolved, and often herbs are necessary to do this.  Combining herbs with the acupuncture maximizes the results we’re able to achieve in a shorter amount of time.  Especially if patients have a goal date at which they would like to talk to their doctors about getting off their medications, I will encourage them to include herbs in their treatment plan.

Like with the treatment of every other ailment, depending on the underlying imbalance, herbs might be a crucial part of treatment if we’re going to get results.
